Our Mission

Wilmington Marathon has been an annual, local tradition since 2010.

Tom Clifford, race director and founder, started Without Limits focusing on events, coaching, and apparel shortly after moving to Wilmington. Running had been a part of his life since he was 11 years old. Clifford genuinely believes we are blessed to be able to run, allowing it to teach us so many things about ourselves and about life. While learning the importance of tradition, the love of running and the value of community in his formative years, Tom started toying with the idea of a race through Wrightsville Beach.

It was then that the Wilmington Marathon was born, filling a gap the community didn’t even know they had. It all started as the Quintiles Wrightsville Beach Marathon in 2010, where participants only ran on the beach. Now, the marathon encompasses the entire Port City by starting at Wrightsville Beach and ending in Historic Downtown Wilmington. The event offers a tour of our well-loved town and its two main attractions: the beach and the river. The Wilmington Marathon has become a annual tradition beloved by the community.

We are lucky to have so many incredible sponsors that align with our mission. This includes our title sponsor, Novant Health, whose mission is to improve the health of our communities, one person at a time. By extending opportunities to participants of all abilities, the Wilmington Marathon promotes diversity and inclusion, which are key values for us and Novant Health.

This race is not possible without you and the support of local leaders for the City of Wilmington, the NC Department of Transportation, the Town of Wrightsville Beach, our community’s law enforcement, our hospital and medical support, the race sponsors, our volunteers and staff, and the patience of Wilmington’s citizens. It takes an enormous number of resources to put this event on, so please thank our race team when you see them.

This race means a lot to us, our community, and our runners. We are grateful for the opportunity to keep the tradition going. Enjoy your time and good luck in your race!
